French files review
by Valery Fremaux - Wednesday, 23 April 2008, 11:09 PM

Hi Tim, we have several works in progress around the Autoview module. I'm finishing the complete review of french files some of them being a bit ... well ... surprising !!

I'm up to have the complete help file done, and will send you a pack with all files in the actual architecture of the Autoview module.

I will get back on your old post relative to some translations not accessible (eg. avedit board) and try to fix that.

I noticed layout issues on the option board, specially when resizing slides. At first, it seems that the board is constrainted by the video player width, although it might need more horizontal space for all buttons and lables to show properly.

We are actually two people (one content designer with no programming skills but with a content making real need, and me, senior programmer in Web technologies) on it, probably night and days for a couple of weeks to get it fully operational and reliable in our use case.

Tell you more later, with files

Cheers.

Yes, sizing on the options section should be determined by the video width. The video width is essentially a proportion of the screen width, so if your translations use phrases which are longer than the english or you have a small screen the phrases probably will run out of space. You could simply change the default in the vresource/autoview.js file if you need more space.

The sizing functions took a lot of work to get right for multiple browsers and screen sizes, I still occasionally find situations where things don't come out quite right. Generally speaking I reckon it's better to loose a bit on the options sections rather than loosing screen space for the slides.

I will try to choose shorter label whenever it is possible. However, (see attached image), if there is a way...

I think you're getting a bigger gap than I am. However, I can't think of a reason why we shouldn't let the options expand into this space if it is available and needed in order to accommodate longer languages strings.

Other translation issues :

On editor, some titles have been splitted by words and some words are reused in GUI. This cause problem as french grammar will invert word orders for correct labelling (blue marks).

The green mark points a word that was not located in translation files.

Regards.

This is where being 'economical' with language strings comes back to bite you.... I should have thought of that when I was doing it. I've got the AutoView code open at the moment, so i'll look into these shortly.

OK, I don't really want to have to put together another release version until we've identified everything that could be a problem with the translation. Since I haven't got CVS/SVN and don't really want to spend time setting one up right now, i've put an extra link called 'bleeding-edge' into the download page. This goes straight to my development directory so you can pull down stuff that's in-progress.

If you download the avedit/editor.js and avedit/lang/en.js files I think i've fixed the issues you describe above and a few others which looked like they would cause a similar problem.
