Video duration and "seek bar" doesn't work
by pau locasd - Tuesday, 12 October 2010, 5:51 PM

Hi,

I'm using:
AutoView 2009100102 3.16 (no, I can't upgrade right now :) )
Moodle 1.9.6;

and a .flv video converted with riva flv from a .wmv file.

The problem is that the total / current duration of the video don't appear in the flowplayer (always 00:00/00:00) and the video "seek bar" (to move forward / backwards in the video) doesn't do anything.
When opening the .flv file in media player classic it shows correctly the total time and the seek bar works correctly.

Any idea what am I doing wrong or how to correct this bug?

[Please note I can't upgrade autoview. I can upgrade flowplayer if it'll work in this older version of autoview]

many thx

That sounds like the flash metadata is missing. The lack of flash metadata will prevent the flash plugin from knowing how long the video is and from seeking within the video. Does the Riva Video player exhibit the no video length/seek problem when playing your file? If it does then this is almost certainly a metadata problem.

Other software which can play flv files directly of your local disc can cope without the metadata because it can easily scan the whole file, the flash plugin can't do this and it relies on the metadata.

Riva should add the metadata for you, so there may be a problem with your installation if this isn't happening. If the problem persists, try downloading FLVMDI from http://www.buraks.com/flvmdi/ and use this to process the flv file.

A few other thoughts:

1) Unfortunately the new version of Flow player only works with the latest AutoView releases.
2) Even with the metadata, if you are not using a video streaming server (such as our lecture capture live system), the ability to seek in a large video file is limited. If you want to move to 10 minutes in, you have to wait until the video has download to this point before the seek will work.

many thanks. Using FLVMDI solved the issue. Media player classic seems to be "smarter" than the riva player and that's why I was lost in this problem :)
